Chainsaw Man has one of the strangest power systems in modern manga because strength is not decided by training alone. Devils become more dangerous according to the fear associated with their names. A Tomato Devil has obvious limits, while a being representing darkness, death or war draws power from fears deeply rooted in humanity. That simple rule creates an unpredictable hierarchy where physical strength is only part of the equation.
Denji may be the protagonist, but he is far from automatically being the strongest person in every situation. Characters such as Makima, the Darkness Devil and the Falling Devil operate on a completely different scale. Pochita complicates the ranking even further because his true form possesses an ability that can alter reality itself. Comparing these characters is therefore less like measuring fighters on a ladder and more like comparing different natural disasters.
Power also explains why the series has produced such memorable character designs. Fans who collect anime figures will recognize that characters such as Denji, Power and Makima are visually iconic, but popularity and combat ability are two different things. Some of the most terrifying entities in Tatsuki Fujimoto’s world appear only briefly and still demonstrate enough strength to completely overwhelm established fighters.
Based on demonstrated abilities, narrative importance and the fundamental rules governing devils, Primal Fear Devils, Pochita and the strongest Horsemen occupy the highest levels. Human Devil Hunters and ordinary hybrids can be exceptional combatants, yet very few can survive against beings whose powers operate beyond conventional fighting.
The Primal Fears stand at the top
The clearest starting point for any Chainsaw Man power ranking is the Primal Fears. These devils embody fears that humans appear to possess instinctively rather than fears created mainly by culture or experience. Their reputation is extraordinary. They are treated as beings fundamentally above most ordinary devils, and their appearances immediately change the scale of the story.
The contrast is striking when looking at characters represented in Chainsaw Man figures, where familiar faces such as Denji and Makima naturally dominate collections. Within the manga itself, however, some less frequently seen entities possess far greater raw power. Darkness Devil and Falling Devil demonstrate why the Primal Fears are treated as monsters even by other supernatural beings.
The Darkness Devil is almost untouchable
The Darkness Devil delivered one of the clearest demonstrations of overwhelming power in the series. When several experienced Devil Hunters and dangerous supernatural fighters encounter it in Hell, they are essentially helpless. Limbs are removed almost instantaneously, characters are attacked without understanding what is happening, and even powerful individuals struggle to react.
Its strength comes from the primal fear of darkness, something closely connected to uncertainty, predators and the inability to see danger. Its abilities are deliberately mysterious, which actually makes the character more intimidating. Chainsaw Man does not present the Darkness Devil as a fighter with a neat collection of techniques. It feels closer to an entity whose presence alone means normal combat rules have stopped applying.
Makima manages to confront it briefly, which says a great deal about her own strength, but the encounter hardly establishes her as clearly superior. The Darkness Devil remains one of the strongest confirmed beings readers have directly seen in action.
The Falling Devil turns fear into a global threat
The Falling Devil provides another example of what separates Primal Fears from ordinary devils. Its power is linked not only to physically falling but also to psychological trauma. Victims can be dragged upward toward the sky when painful memories overwhelm them, turning emotional weakness into an actual battlefield disadvantage.
The scale of its influence makes the Falling Devil particularly frightening. Its appearance causes consequences far beyond a single street or individual fight. It also displays tremendous regeneration and durability, making conventional attacks largely ineffective.
Characters who are extremely dangerous under normal circumstances suddenly appear vulnerable around a Primal Fear. That difference is essential when discussing the strongest characters in Chainsaw Man. Power is not just about who can punch harder. Abilities that manipulate gravity, perception, fear or reality can make traditional combat skill almost irrelevant.
Why is Pochita so powerful?
Pochita’s true Chainsaw Devil form deserves a position among the most powerful characters because of an ability no normal devil has demonstrated on the same level. When the Chainsaw Devil consumes certain devils, the concepts associated with them can disappear from the world. This is much more significant than simply killing an enemy.
Normally, devils participate in a cycle involving Earth and Hell. Killing one does not necessarily eliminate the fear it represents forever. Pochita can interfere with something much deeper. His power potentially changes history, memory and reality by removing concepts themselves.
This explains why powerful devils fear Chainsaw Man and why Makima becomes obsessed with controlling him. Pochita also possesses enormous speed, strength, regeneration and combat instincts in his full form. He can tear through groups of dangerous opponents while continuing to fight despite catastrophic injuries.
Whether Pochita has greater raw power than every Primal Fear is debatable. What makes him extraordinary is the nature of his ability. A character does not need to generate the biggest explosion to be the most dangerous. Pochita possesses a mechanism capable of permanently changing the world, giving the Chainsaw Devil a unique position in the hierarchy.
Makima combines power with absolute control
Makima is arguably the most dangerous character in the first major portion of Chainsaw Man because her strength extends far beyond direct combat. As the Control Devil, she can dominate beings she considers inferior to herself. That ability lets her transform powerful humans and devils into extensions of her own arsenal.
Her greatest weapon is therefore accumulation. Makima can use contracts, manipulated individuals and supernatural abilities while remaining extremely difficult to kill. Her intelligence makes those abilities even more effective. She rarely approaches a battle as a simple duel and instead creates situations where the opponent has already lost several moves before realizing a confrontation has begun.
Makima also demonstrates enough direct power to interact with entities that ordinary hunters could never challenge. She can inflict devastating damage over huge distances and use controlled beings to produce combinations of abilities unavailable to a normal fighter.
Still, Makima’s power has conditions. Her domination depends heavily on how she perceives the target, and some of her greatest feats involve preparation, contracts and resources gathered from others. She belongs near the top of the hierarchy, but describing her as unquestionably stronger than every Primal Fear would ignore how deliberately overwhelming those creatures are portrayed.
Yoru and the Horsemen can reshape the balance of power
Yoru, the War Devil, has one of the highest potential ceilings in the manga. Her basic ability sounds simple: she can turn things she considers her property into weapons. Yet the strength of those weapons is heavily affected by emotional attachment and guilt. That allows ordinary objects, relationships and even larger concepts to become sources of tremendous destructive force.
The War Devil is particularly interesting because her power can fluctuate. War becomes stronger when humanity fears war more intensely. This means Yoru’s position is not necessarily fixed in the way readers might expect from a conventional battle manga.
The Horsemen as a group deserve special attention. Control, War, Famine and Death represent enormous concepts. Makima already demonstrated what the Control Devil could accomplish through manipulation and planning, while Yoru shows how dangerous War can become when fear surrounding her concept increases.
Death is especially significant when discussing theoretical power. Fear of death is arguably among humanity’s most universal fears, so the Death Devil naturally sits at the highest conceptual level of Chainsaw Man’s system. Exact rankings can still depend on feats and circumstances, but from the logic established by the manga, Death belongs in any discussion of the absolute strongest entities.
Denji is powerful for different reasons
Denji is easy to underestimate when comparing him with cosmic entities. His normal Chainsaw Man transformation does not automatically give him the same overwhelming presence as Pochita’s full form. He regularly gets injured, loses limbs and finds himself completely outmatched.
Yet Denji’s greatest combat advantage is his ability to keep functioning through situations that would kill almost anyone else. Blood allows him to regenerate, his hybrid body makes death unusually difficult, and his fighting style is spectacularly unpredictable. Denji is willing to use his own injuries as weapons, exploit absurd environmental opportunities and accept pain that a disciplined fighter would naturally avoid.
His victories often come from improvisation rather than superior statistics. Against enemies who expect logical behavior, that makes him extremely dangerous. Denji may not be the strongest Chainsaw Man character in terms of raw supernatural power, but he is among the hardest major characters to permanently put down.
The Gun Devil remains a benchmark for destructive power
Few entities demonstrate raw devastation as efficiently as the Gun Devil. Its speed and ability to kill enormous numbers of people within moments made it one of the world’s great supernatural threats. The fear generated by firearms and mass violence amplified its strength dramatically.
What makes the Gun Devil useful for understanding the power scale is that it initially appears almost unbeatable. As readers learn more about Primal Fears, the Horsemen and Pochita, the hierarchy expands. A creature capable of catastrophic destruction is not necessarily at the absolute top.
The Gun Devil remains among the strongest conventional devils because its offensive abilities are extraordinarily efficient. Against most humans, Devil Hunters and weaker supernatural beings, there may be practically no opportunity to respond before the attack has already landed.
Quanxi proves humans and hybrids can still be terrifying
Not every elite fighter needs to manipulate a fundamental fear. Quanxi stands out because her speed, experience and skill allow her to dismantle groups of opponents before they can properly react. She is regularly treated as one of the most formidable close combat characters in the series.
Her hybrid nature gives her another advantage. Like Denji and other weapon hybrids, Quanxi possesses regenerative abilities that make her much harder to eliminate than a normal human. Her Crossbow Hybrid transformation adds tremendous ranged offensive power to an already exceptional physical fighter.
She would still face enormous problems against creatures such as the Darkness Devil. That does not make her weak. It demonstrates just how wide the gap is between elite combatants and the supernatural ceiling of the Chainsaw Man universe.
So who is the strongest character in Chainsaw Man?
There is no completely objective ranking because Chainsaw Man deliberately gives characters abilities that interact differently depending on circumstances. Based on the rules of the universe, however, the highest tier belongs to Primal Fears and exceptional entities capable of bypassing normal combat logic.

Makima represents another type of power entirely. With preparation and enough controlled resources, she can challenge opponents who might exceed her in straightforward combat. Yoru’s strength can also evolve dramatically depending on humanity’s fear of war.
That uncertainty is part of what makes Chainsaw Man’s strongest characters so interesting. Fujimoto avoids turning strength into a clean numerical system. Fear, psychology, contracts, regeneration, circumstances and intelligence all matter. The most dangerous character is often not simply the one with the strongest attack, but the one whose ability changes the rules of the fight.
